Papermaking Basics
Paper is believed to have originated in China in the second century as an alternative writing material to silk. Paper production was introduced to Europe in the 12th century. Nearly 200 years of automated paper production have led to major changes in information networks around the world.
The first step in a typical paper manufacturing process is the production of pulp from wood chips. Softwoods, such as spruce and pine that are fine-fiber, strong and resilient, are some of the most widely used species in North America. In general, the pulp, which is the raw material of paper, can be made using two methods: chemical pulping or mechanical pulping.
The first involves breaking down the chemical makeup of the fetus into a liquid using various chemicals, including sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide. The cooking liquid is a by-product of production, as it is washed from the cellulose fibers to produce the pulp. The chemical pulping process is used to produce high quality paper at a higher production cost than the mechanical pulping process.
Mechanical pulping can also be categorized into two subgroups, namely ground pulping and thermomechanical pulping (TMP) which does not remove lignin from the fibers in contrast to the chemical pulping process. In both methods the flakes are simply fed into a strainer to break up and convert the material into fibrous bundles. Strainers consist of rotating steel discs that are heated by steam and have different types of segments. The final product of TMP is a dark, unbleached paste with short length fibres. The main advantage of this type of pulp is that its yield is higher than that of chemical pulp.
